hi all

I'm new here, been thinking about a transit as a project for a while, many years back i had a 3.0 litre V6 mk1 transit ambulance to bomb around in and have wanted to make my own day van type conversion for a while now.

I have a couple of vehicles to clear out and a 24 valve sierra to finish off so that i have space for a new project and then i will be looking for a van.

I'm not an expert on transits, but i THINK what im after is a mk3/4 SWB low top van with a lift up tailgate and preferably no sliding side door.

Am i right in thinking these have IFS?

I have a 5.0 Litre alloy OHC mercedes V8 and 4 speed auto im gonna use as a powerplant for it, its a bit wide (almost 3 foot at the heads) so i'm not sure if the engine bay is gonna be wide enough.

It makes about 240bhp so should shove the van along alright and i have also been told the transit model i'm looking for uses a variant of the atlas axle as fitted to the capri's so i can get a higher ratio final drive and LSD with a few mods.

I need to find out if the front hubs are the same as any others in the Ford range so i can change the wheel stud pcd or maybe fit larger brakes etc etc.

There is a military scrapyard not far from me so i want to fit fighter jet front seats on swivel bases and maybe a row of airliner seats in the back, along with a sink fold down bed etc.

Anyway, nice to meet you all and finally find a transit forum!!! and hopefully in a few months i can get my van under way!!

aha, just spotted the wheel stud modification thread, thats handy as i have some 17" MIMs sitting about with tyres on that are either 5 stud ford or mercedes (havent investigated properly yet, they came with a 24 valve granny i bought) so i guess i'm sorted for wheels now as well. :D

welcome :D
You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

Welcome :D
Even if you don't need it, grab it.
The minute you do need it, it'll be gone.
