Non-turbo 190 Performance..

Postby tractive-effort » Fri Apr 21, 2006 10:02 pm

Hello - sure you chaps have heard this a million times before, but can anybody give me some acceptable performance figures for a late 1997 Transit 190, SHT, LWB, 2.5di non-turbo? She has the close ratio MT75 box and will slow down to about 40 (or less) :? on even the slightest incline. Top speed on the flat will be about 55-60mph. I have recently had a new lift pump fitted, have put pints of Redex injector cleaner through her and this has slightly improved acceleration, but still painfully sluggish on hills. Am about to put on a recon injector pump, but this evening stumbled upon this most informative of web forums - so would appreciate any anecdotal experience/technical knowledge you have!!

Many Thanks,

Stuart.. :D

welcome :D have you seen the threads about tweaking the pump :? this might be something to try before putting a new pump on :D
You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

Oh and also - one other strange thing! When the van reaches a certain amount of RPM (very high), she will surge forward as if there is a turbo fitted. It almost seems as if the problem is air related as opposed to fuel?? ANyway I'll try the pump tweak when I find the thread!!

Fitted a Motorcraft one a mere 1000 miles ago. Everything else seems ok with it - first time starter on sub-zero mornings, very little smoke at any time, uses minimal oil, 98000 genuine miles,, fully serviced etc

yeah i thought pump timing..or even something to do with the inside of the pump..like the advance part inside.
does the van sort of have a slight misfire at low revs or a idle??

No misfire at idle, starts within a second of turning the key. You can sometimes feel it holding back though at low revs, then all of a sudden surge forward. I did think pump-timing myself, but I always thought lots of black smoke signalled this?? It doesn't smoke at all (not that I can see anyway :?: )
