Rear disc conversion!!!

well this is my latest idea of how to get my wheels fitted
im thinking granada cosworth rear disks and calipers - thats my new pcd -112mm i think it will just fit over the wheel bearing!! turn the ouside of the hub down and do the same to the halfshafts!!
make up a bracket to mount the caliper on to of the axle?

just a thought at the moment!! i havent done any serious measuring!!

anyone think of any pitfalls or anyone tried it before

you will make it fit!! ..I usually find a large hammer and gas axe does the trick.....

I have thought about this aswell,

only thing I can see thats a slight problem, the granada disk isn't that deep in it offset, so the mounting bracket will have to be spaced over a fair way.

I know they are 273mm dia, not sure if they are going to be big enough. Another idea, same thing, but use alloy bells, then you can run any size disc you want, I know to a few cossie boys running 330mm rears :O

these are the disks i was thinking about and like you say theres not much offset!!

although id have thought for mine only an swb they would be ok - it weighs less than the granny cossy they came off!!

This is done on capris, cortina's and escorts all the time, usually requires the hub to be turned down so the disc will fit over, once you've done that you can play with different discs (of the same PCD) to alter the depth of the bell to get the disc face closer or further away from the end of the axle.
Cortina for instace uses a peugeot 406 disc cos the depth of the bell lines it up with the caliper and the PCD is the same, on the rear it uses fiesta front discs with sierra/granada rear calipers but other combinations fit just this is the cheapest/easyest option.
A good brake catalog will be very, very, handy, i have one you can borrow when i've finished doing me cortina.
For the caliper bracket measure the diametre of the axle casing and give Rallysport a call possably?, they do blank/pre drilled ones for a few different types of axle both weld on and bolt on maybey one will fit?
or make youre own/get a local company to do em.

ive had a look through and the best offset i can find are so far are mercedes ones but getting the calipers may prove more expensive!! if i could find some with the same width as the granada ones i'd be sorted!! doubt they need the "vented" width but it would be nice!!

Having a look in the haynes manual it looks like i could make a bracket that would pick up on the 4 backplate mounting bolts that would also push the caliper nearer the disc aswell!!- i have access to an industrial welder and i know the bloke who orders all the steel at work - well its me!! so that shouldnt be a problem either!!!

How deep an offset do you need luke?

I have no idea of the dimensions you need but have you thought aboth the Saab/Vauxhall type or Volvo type rear Disks, that have the handbrake shoes inside so they are very deep indeed.

im only at the "thinking about it" stage at the moment i haven't got the tape out yet!!

i take your point about the disks with the handbrake inside - use them for the offset and retain the ford caliper!! the only prob is i would have to redrill all those you mentioned to suit my pcd 5x112mm which is granada, merc, vw, and audi!! but it might be worth considering!!!

Im now 80% in favour of going down this route i think i'll strip an old axle take some serious measurements and see if i can get it all working before i take my van out of action!!

I haven't checked this, but i think Merc Sprin**r's (Sorry to swear) used 5x112, and they have rear discs, non vented tho, at 16mm thick. Merc calipers dont have a handbrake linkage

Scorpio calipers use discs that are 20mm thick.

Noticed the Vito MPV 200, 220 & 230 Diesel 1997 2003 they use a 280x10mm disc. The Merc disc is 63mm tall. The Vito runs the same pcd as the car.

XR4x4's use a 254x10mm disc, use the calipers off the sierra and suitable brackets!

I dont know if you can do it in the UK but i know that DBA sell blank discs

They can be ordered with no stud holes but they do have the center bore

But then again would it matter what pcd they are as i would be inclined to drill them to suit the 5x160 and fit them behind the wheel adaptor

another problem i have thought of is the disks use the centreboss to locate on - i wouldn't have that so i would be relying on the studs to locate it central!

BTW - i think sp***ters are 130mm PCD - not sure tho!

sundowner thats not a bad idea locating on the back of the hub i will have a look to see if it is possable!!

Also i need to look at my front disks - theres no point in fitting bigger disks on the back if the fronts are smaller!! eventually i will fit mk4/5 ifs so the biggest disks i can get on them is my limit on the front!

Does anyone have any figures for the brakes dunno what stopping power is measured in?? but i could work out more accuratly what disks are needed!
