Fuel pump

Postby avromo » Wed Feb 21, 2024 2:53 pm

My fuel pump just went on my mk6 2.4 rwd 90ps 2003 transit

I was quoted 1k + vat to fix at my local

I have seen them second hand for 200-300. Is it a difficult fix and does a second hand unit pose any issue in terms of programming?
thanks

the 75 and 90ps are vp30s, the 115,120,125s are vp44s, so different. on a secondhand one it needs to be virginised, many people out there do it for cheap, or you can do it with forscan. mechanically its not especially hard to do, start to finish-if you take off the slam panel and bumper, to make it easier -its about 2 hours work. all you need is a tool to hold the timing sprocket that attaches to the pump, theyre about 20 quid

The pumps themselves rarely fail, it's the electronic gubbins on them which usually fail. They can be repaired for much less cost than replacing the whole pump.

What actual fault codes are you getting.??

i dont know the code as the garage guy did it.
now its sat on the road outside garage. I would have to go and check, would forscan work with engine not running ? i.e how would i use forscan to check for this?

Yes, Forscan will show any existing fault codes.

Those codes point to a failing EDC on the pump....they can be repaired. It's usually a failed mosfet on the little circuit board in the EDC.

Also worth checking the timing chain/tensioner & guides.

how can i find out what pump it is? i notice that people that fix them only fix certain ones (not sure why)

Is it likely that the chain has issues b/c of this failed fuel pump?

When the guy came to try and start it after i broke down thinking I had run out of fuel , he was putting easy start in and the engine seemed to be shaking like crazy when he tried to start it, he said normal for this age large engine, but i knew it didnt shake like that on start up . Hope it didnt affect the chain?

thanks

SCAS has named which pumps go with which engines in his post above

Trying vainly to start a dead duratorq engine can possibly make the timing chain jump sprockets :(

does it then kill the engine or just needs timing up after fixing the pump?

As above...2.4 75 & 90ps engines run the VP-30 pump, all the others run the VP-44 pump, they're similar though.

If timing jumps teeth, usually it pulls the bolts holding the rocker shafts down. Mk6 rocker setup is different to the Mk7.

thats not great! is there a way of checking before going through the bother of taking off fuel pump and sending the electrical part to be fixed ?
