converting a Mk6 SWB from double doors to single tailgate

Postby airinpiston » Sun May 04, 2008 6:31 pm

Hi All
I’ve just been given a MK6 SWB . :D It needs some exterior TLC. One of the jobs will be to replace the rear doors. The locking mechanism is broken and both of the doors are bent. The big question is, can I convert this to a single tailgate. It looks like the flat panel area on the roof for the hinges are already there. I assume Fords wouldn’t make a different body shape. Does any one have any previous experience of doing this?

Regards

Alan

The D pillars have the bits for the hinges to attach to ? Would the hole be the same size at the back ? the fact that it would have the bulges left from where the hinges attach wouldn't bother me. Could you send me some pictures of the attachment points hinges / struts etc from your own van ?

many thanks

ive seen it done before on all the other mk transits but not a mk6 (or7) you'd probly be the 1st to do it :D

ideally you could do with getting the 2 vans side by side to have a good look :D

A quick update on progress. I have now got a tailgate. I came new from E-bay. The only problem is it's only designed for mechanical locks and not electric locks, :( but we will give it a go. The main good point is it fits the hole in the back :D .So off to Ford Monday to buy Hinges and gas struts and see it I can get the whole thing hung properly. Will take pictures various and post later on
