Propshaft hitting frame

Postby meerkatmag » Wed Apr 03, 2024 11:21 am

Whenever I fix something a new problem appears immediately...

Anyway, the propshaft next to gearbox flange is hitting the frame, quite a lot and its dented the frame and marked the propshaft. Clunking can be heard in the van.

I can't lift the gearbox upwards, it feels held by the mount securely with only slight wobble due to the rubber mount.
But I'm guessing it has to be the crossmember transmission mount that has failed? Allowing the gearbox to move upwards. I have an overdrive gearbox with the vibration reduction system.

Has this happened to anyone? Simple fix, just replace the rubber mount?

Your camper is not a recognisable body construction so maybe different underneath may have a extra crossmember can you put some photos up so we can see anything different to a chassis cab set up .I’ve fitted o/d gear boxes to mk 3 vans and even if the propshaft centre bearing was worn out I can’t think it would hit a xmember unless the shaft was really bent or the u/j ,s worn out

Has it got the side rubber mounting they used to come unbounded the brackets bolt to the chassis and a centre bolt holds the xmember to it they come unbounded I have in the passed removed the centre captive bolt and and used a nut and bolt and a big washer to hold them together when we needed to use a van at work till the new parts came

There are rubber blocks between the crossmember and the bracket that attaches to the frame. It's totally solid though, it looks like a bolt goes right through and it's held firmly.

That is what came unbonded on what we had at work if you pushed the xmember up you could lift it up off the rubber we had a few do it

Are you using a jack or prybar to try lifting the g/box?

No I just tried to push it up by hand. It moves but doesn't travel far. Maybe with more force if would free up. I'm thinking it's this mounting bracket that's come apart.

It looks like the crossmember is sitting too high, there are different lengths of brackets that bolt to the chassis rails. Longer ones would m
lower everything, it looks like the correct overdrive crossmember with a step down in the middle to lower the box?

That sounds likely as its very close to the frame. I've had a look on catcar and it doesn't list a bracket for the overdrive. There's a less than 9 seats, and more than 9 seat version. Not sure which would be longer? I bet these would be a nightmare to to find.

I might just try to replace the gearbox mount and see if it holds it in place well enough.

I’d remove the xmember and check all the bushes your xmember is stepped down so is a proper one one of the o/d boxes I fitted to a mk3 I had to modify a standard one by lowering the centre mount and never had a problem.if this is a new problem and you have not had a problem till now then it’s got to be the rubber mounting on your photo you have a ratchet strap holding the centre mount down so that should stop it lifting so I’d be looking at the side mounting.

I'm in France on holiday just now, I fitted the ratchet strap yesterday to try to stop it moving. I haven't driven it yet since. I'm hoping it will hold it enough to get back to England.

And yes it's a new problem so hopefully just new bushes needed.

That will hold the centre one if it turns out to be the side ones if you remove the centre bolt out of it and get a longer bolt with a heavy duty washer to cover the hole in the bottom of the bracket it will stop it moving up you may just notice a bit of vibration with it taking the give out of the rubber

Thanks I'll try that if it's still happening. Cheers for the help

it turned out pretty much all my rubber mounts were shot. Both engine mounts were soft and highly compressed, the gearbox centre mount was also very loose and one of the crossmember rubber mounts was completely detached. I've been working my way through replacing all of these. Hopefully will be like new afterwards.

Thanks for all the advice
