In some other posts I saw the big nut needs only some millimetres to move. Is that right? Is it possible to ruin the timing absolutely?

But yes you will only need to move the pully a tiny bit at a time and try it to see if it improves your symptoms.

Scribe a line so you know where it was to start with. then you can move anywhere within the slot and it should still just about start and run, but you usually only need to move it a small amount.
