Mk 4&5 compatible high output Alternators

Postby nasifkhan » Mon Jun 13, 2016 4:27 pm

HI

Currently I have the standard 95A alternator but I was looking for something bigger. There are some aftermarket ones that give output at 120A but they are pricey.
What other vehicle/brand alternators are compatible with mk4&5

None as far as I know (because of the vac pump on the back)

Minormatt is right, couldn't find anything bigger neither.
Maybe better to, because on the forum there are problems registered with the bolts who have to hold the alternator. 8)
More power full alternator... bigger forces on those bolts.
More problems that could arrive
I upgraded my MK3 with a 95A alternator, hope for minor problems, I will not go to a foreign country without spare bolts 8)

No idea how or where you get the appropriate bits and bobs (including longer belt), but apparently some ambulances had a 'dual alternator' arrangement. That's one possibility ...

Thanks for the replies.
I have read about dual alternators but that's something I wanted to stay away from.
From memory...it was an extra pull with longer belt and attaching the other alternator somewhere and the wiring it.
But that's something I didn't really want.

Hi, I have second alternator on my diesel camper. It is fitted under the exhaust manifold and driven by the power steering belt.

Please tell us more about it
Where did you buy the components
Where came the second alternator off? Type off alternator?
How is it bolt on, how is it tensioned?
How heavy is the second alternator?
Does they charge the same battery or separated battery's banks?
Pictures please???

I have to ask; why do you need bigger than a 95 amp alternator :?:

It's an ice cream van. I have a battery bank that needs charging at a high rate due to the equipment on board.

Hi, I think the second alternator came from a scrap Montego. It charges a second 95 amp battery for the camper internals and is tensioned by moving the power steering pump. John Deere forage harvesters have 2 or 3 alternators all connected to the same battery so no problems in having more than one alternator on a vehicle.

If you already have the 95amp unit in place then I suggest you take a look at http://www.adverc.co.uk/products/ site. One of their charge controllers could do the trick. It takes over from the built-in regulator to allow the alternator to go flat out until the battery us fully charged, rather than tapering off the charge rate like the standard regulation. They are usually fitted to public service vehicles, etc. that do a lot of starting and short trips.

You could install a Sterling Alternator Regulator. http://sterling-power.com/collections/a ... reg-d-pdar
Your alternator will act like pro charger
