BIG Portugal-Morroco-Portugal trip: WHAT SPARES?

Hi,
We will go in a somewhat big Trip (3000-4000Km) from Portugal to South Morroco and back on our's MK2 van.
It will take place from 31March->15 April, so it will be 15 days running.

The aim of the trip will be riding the Dirtsurfer on the Atlas mountains and on the desert powered by the wind.
The van will take 5/6 persons and will be completly loaded with luggage and sport's stuff. By other words it will be FULL!!

I've already made a small checkout on the van, including:
-changing all the filters (air, oil and diesel).
-changing oil.
-changing brake pads and checking discs.
-greasing direction pins.(I don't know the tech name of them...)
-greasing front bearings.
What more should I verify?

What spares do you reccomend to take?
By now, I already have a spare-new water pump and an extra complete wheel.
What more should I take?


I'll apreciate any comment on this.

Change your cam belt, if it hasn't been done recently. Take a clutch cable with you as it can stop you dead if it snaps but can be replaced at the side of the road. Hoses are another thing to check.

I forgot to mention that I've (more or less) checked the hoses, too.

Recently, I had to change the small aluminium-inlet that brings (or takes...) coolant to the the engine's head... Nothing but an age problem: -It was completly corroded!
Then, I've performed a small check on all hoses, but what we can check in hoses? -They are leak-free, I grabed them and they feel "rubby" to me.. -What more should I look on the hoses?

-A clutch cable it's a good idea! I've read here in the forum that it's always a good to take one around, but sincerely I forgot it completly!

-I'm going to take care of changing the cam belt. (any help/info/link to right post in this issue will be great!)

Also, if someone could post some help/info/link to right post regarding the changing of the water-pump on a MK2, it would be greatly appreciated.

may be worthwhile greasing the inside of your air filter housing, this traps sand b 4 clogging your filter. dont know how far into the desert youre going. i presume youre sticking to the tarmack? if not sand ladders and shovels are cool. not transit spares i know, but not sure about your route.

I'll do the greasing of the air filter housing as well.

We'll (try) not to get too much in the sand, but for sure we will drive in pretty nasty trails...
Your advice for shovels and ladders it's very good.

Any more sugestions?
I really appreciate any contribuiton regarding the water pump mounting (if we ever needed to change it...)
We bought a new/complete water pump, but we would like to make sure that's the right one for our van. (the man in the store swears that's t the right one, but we'll never know, and Morocco may not be the nicest place to find out...)
Our engine it's the 2.4 DI. There are several water-pumps for this engine?

As far as I know, the water pumps didn't change for engines at least till 1991, probably even the mid 90s.

Good point, a lot of people get this wrong, and a phase1 could well be a York.

Prob worth taking a throttle cable, and alternator belt(s)

Tyre pump is good as you can't always change a tyre where the van is

We will carry 2 spare tires and a 12v compressor...

a couple of us went to spain a few years back, 1 van had a punture, no problen, cahnged it in 15mins, then 10 miles later, because the spare was old or never been on, the valve/seal had gone and that went flat, we used the sapre from the other van, but if he was on his own, alittle thing like a flat would have been a problem...

How old is the battery

Might be worth fitting a new one before you go, if it's old, or at least take a jump starter pack with you

A Haynes Manual would be an excellent investment. Especially with all those spares on board and limited technical knowledge. They're around £15 - £20 and worth every penny.

Bloody hell you're gonna need a support lorry for all this! Can't you just take out some sort of break down cover? I used to do this sort of mileage everyweek and never carried any of these spares!
