update on the cossie

Postby custom » Sun Jul 30, 2006 3:13 pm

right im half way through doing this conversion and thought i would post up some problems you will have when fitting it into a mark 5 transit
im using the adapter plate and mt75 transit gearbox both of these need adapting if you want to use the original cosworth manifolds and down pipes as i am as they dont fit they foul on the gearbox and on the adapter plate,

2 the electrics are an absulate nightmare im hving a friend sort mine who is an electricition

3 physically the engine doesent fit in the van you have to mod the bulk head quite a bit about 3-4 inches i believe near the drivers side clutch pedal

4 you have to use the granada water bottle as the transit one is completly different

so far all this has taken me nearly 2 weeks but will be worth it in the long run as i have modded the engine so it should be putting out about 275bhp and a fair bit of tourque then when its in and running its off to TOP BOSS in derby as these specialise in this engine and it will be tuned to 400 bhp there sierra with a 24v in it is running nearly 700 bhp with twin super chargers

i will update this post with any more problems i encounter cheers craig

Ive seen a few 24 valve trannies now, makes a good conversion but you HAVE to change the rear axle ratio or they are usless in any of the first 3 gears!!

what have you done to it to get 275bhp? thats a fairly strange output for these engines as once you hit the 240ish mark the plenum wont flow enough air to get much more, and if your going to the bother of making up/adapting/buying something to replace it or going over to proper TB's then they normally end up well over 300bhp.

decatting, induction kit, chip and later BOB cams will see em making the 240ish bhp thats normal without big bucks being spent, that lot and fitting a big end girdle to increase the rev limit to 7000rpm is the usual set of mods.

most of the forced induction engines are wound down to around 400bhp for normal use (apart from the dyno run) as after that you gotta spend big money on finding a gearbox to take the power.

its had new piper cams induction kit exhaust plus had head skimmed and lightened and ballenced flywheel plus a few other bits and bobs done it is easy to get far more than 300 bhp out of one for a start top boss do single and twin turbos and single and twin super chargers it is possible to get nearly 700bhp out of one plus if you remove the cats that frees up nearly 40bhp on its own

tt twin turbo kit can be easily made to fit   i happen to have some twin turbo parts here  8) but they will be needed for a future project 8) 8) just need the engine i did have a 12v one but not sure to rebuild that or go 24v :?
You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

er no it dont!!! 5 -10bhp if your lucky!!

not saying you cant get power out of these engines, i love em, had a fair few cars with em in now (including a Dodge Viper replica, off the road with a destroyed gearbox. :( ) and tinkered with em too, i have two granny cossies at the mo, ones decatted and converted to manual, back to back on a rolling road it made 196bhp with the cats on and 202bhp with em removed and no other mods.

there are a lot of myths and wild claims for em though, but i have NEVER seen a N/A one make more than 250bhp running the standard BOA plenum despite the claims you see in mags, it just wont flow enough air.

there are a couple of aftermarket plenums available (i think top boss do one) and there are guys working on adapter plates to fit the later BOB plenum to the BOA base plate.

i seen the twin turbos running 600bhp, but as i said, those running grass track and saloon racers with em in all stick around the 400bhp mark as there are no reasonably priced gearboxes that will take that sort of power without exploding.
