Not been doing much to the van of late, but I noticed that after trying on, no! really I meant admiring the recently painted rims, (like you do) that you could see the rusty brake callipers behind. A quick trip down to the local motor factors, just nose through their shelves, I’m sure he hates it, I hardly ever buy anything, but I thought red would look good, everyone likes red... but £10 for a piddly little can!
Back home again and a quick search on eBay, (like you do) nothing at the right price for red, but I did find a calliper kit, made of yellow paint, a hardener and aerosol cleaner. I put a minimal bid on and £2 later; I went about a mile up the road to collect it. Cheap as chips!
Everything was wire brushed down and the paint mixed as instructed, it was a very thin kind of paint, just settling into the casting of the calliper, but it said on the instructions to repaint after fifteen minutes. The second coat went on, it was starting to look like a plastic coating, filling in all the imperfections and by the time I had done the second calliper, the cheap paintbrush I’d used had started to melt!!!! Just in time. A splash round of smooth black hammerite on the leg and two hours later it was hard enough to try on the rim again, very satisfying.
I touched up the edge of the brake disk with some silver exhaust paint, probably burn off in no time, but I like the finish. Onto the rear drums next week if the weather warms up.
