Help Needed!!! - Transit interior Heater/blower

Postby FiestaST » Mon Oct 29, 2007 7:12 pm

Hi there,

This is my first post, so HELLO EVERYONE!
I own a 1999 Transit 2.5TD and out of the blue, the fan stopped working. The fan as in the interior heating/blower that is.
The fuse had blown (No.1 fuse in the fuse box - 30A) so I simply replaced it and have had no joy.

With the new fuse in place, I swith the fan on to number 1 (no joy) Number 2 (No Joy) and when you switch it to number 3 it blows the fuse!

I've done some minor inspection, including making sure the connections on the switch and the motor it's self are connected properly, but I suspect it is a problem with the fan motor - open circuit maybe? If anyone can chirp in here I'd be more than willing to hear suggestions!

Failing this, if I need to replace the heater fan/motor, how the hell do I get to this??

1) Does the whole dash have to be removed?
2) is it an easy job??
3) Any good suggestions would be appreciate!!

Here are some rather crude pictures of the dash so you know the job in hand! Sorry they are also rather large!!!!!

Yours thankfully, in advance - I look forward to hearing what you have to suggest - As I am not particularly keen in paying maindealer prices for labour/Parts!!!!!

Regards

Hi Justin, it sounds like your blower motor has seized. To get access to it, remove the stereo and stowage tray underneath it. Then remove the steering wheel, followed by top & bottom steering column cowling and then the speedo cluster trim (black plastic surround). This should give you access to the centre console securing screws, which need to be removed so that the entire centre console can be removed.

You will then have full access to the fan motor. Unclip the power cable and unscrew the securing bolt then rotate the motor anti-clockwise and it should pull away from its location. Confirm whether or not its seized by giving it a quick spin by hand.

Thanks for the Swift reply!!

So this job I now have before me, as I have never attempted to do this before, how long would it roughly take??? What is the difficulty in this??

Stereo no probs, Sterring wheel no probs, just unure about taking the dash/Consul out....

Any idea how much a new fan motor would cost me????

Cheers
Justin

Also check the fan 3 way resistor behind the front grill, next to the R/H headlight for dodgy connections.

I reckon it'll have knackered the fan switch if you haven't got 1 and 2 settings - they seem to melt easily should any extra current go through them. Mine was seized/melted solid.

Hi and welcome,

First, your blower motor is not open circuit - this condition could not blow a fuse.
There is a possibility that the motor may have seized but if that is the case the fuse will not blow immediately.
So, you must first check the condition of the heater resistor, this is the device which adjusts the 3 speeds of your blower, and is located under the bonnet behind the headlamp on the driver side. It is a large wirewound resistor and unfortunately is very badly placed in terms of being "open to the elements". You will be able to judge by the condition of the resistor and particularly the spade terminals whether this is a likely solution to your problem. Unless it looks in pristine condition it is the most likely cause of your problem and I suspect in your case that the unit may be actually shorting to earth, and as the previous post mentions you cannot rule out shorted terminals in the switch itself caused by the failed resistor .... Check both to be certain. Use the 'search' facility on here to find an excellently detailed description of how to access the resistor, and how to re-position it to avoid further ongoing problems (It is a very common problem).

Good luck.

Ok, I have located the bugger!!

If I replace this, will this cure my problem?? Also where do I buy this resistor? Is it a maindealer part??? What do I need to look for to see if the resistor is ok or Fcuked???

The heads of the fixing screws look like stars (Star shaped allen key head) are these a nightmare to undo???

thank for the help so far......keep the info coming. The more I know about this the more confident I will be!
