My new POS

Postby MinorMatt » Mon Oct 23, 2023 2:34 pm

So... this was was local (walking distance), on ebay, MOT'd, and has some engine issues (a bugger to start and smokes)... so of course it was worth a punt!

The previous owner says the issues started when he (a chippy) changed the EGR and mucked it up.

Its a 2006, so is £140/yr tax, a MWB T350 RWd 2.4 with 2800kg trailer capacity - but poverty spec. Mine for the grand sum of £810.

Feel free to take the piss

P.S.

I would quite like a roof rack (a proper one, not just bars) for it if anyone knows of anything going?

I managed to buy one fairly locally (well the other side of London  ) - I haven't collected it yet though.

Anyway - as well as being a POS its now being a PITA.

Its still not doing what it should :(

Short story is

- Bought as a bad starter (supposedly after EGR changed)
- no difference with new EGR (Pierburg) fitted & blanked.
- starts (eventually when cold) on easy start, but smokes (white, but black under harsh acceleration).
- will restart after cranking when hot (but only with throttle)
- injector leak off test gives results of 35-42ml after 4 mins (but I am going to have to recheck this and the calibration of the pots due to a few issues).
- cam position sensor code comes up when driven, but not when sat idling.
- diagnostics shows cam/crank sync as ok when cranking.
- cleaned cam pos sensor when engine was hot, inc plug and plugged and unplugged a few times. - it then behaved normally when hot, but won't start from cold again this morning.

Once its up and running it will need quite a lot of TLC & Cleaning, but its really not too bad at all for a builders van!

Hmmm

I took one of the little pots on the leak off kit, put in on the scales, zero'd it and filled it with water to 100ml.

The weight shown on the scale was 53g  thats a serious miscalibration! only 53% of what its meant to be. That means all injectors are in spec :)

Pump and Pilot learns all completed and passed - so the injectors must be ok?

I found the pots in my test kit are marked but unsure with what scale
I had a big syringe and calibrated them with that.
Not sure if it oz the markings are but certainly not ml.

the advertising said the pot was 105ml, and highest mark on them is 105

not an issue now I know though!

Any thoughts on the issue Iain? Currently looking at air ingress

Leak off pipes would be my first port of call, the O'rings are a barsteward for getting little Knicks in them.
Then filter head. Euro4 doesn't have a tank pump so relies on good sealing joints in the whole system for the lift pump on the back of the HP pump to draw.

You could try putting a hand pump bulb inline just before the filter and pump that up before starting which doesn't solve your issue but could confirm the fault of fuel draining back.

250 ish miles and just over half a tank.

It feels under powered - but that may just be because I've been driving a 300hp volvo?

Its now got an addition. I don't want the pipe tube, but its it worth anything? Its a rhino one :)
