this is a bit left field but try putting a touch of cooking oil in with your diesel i run a weak mix in my sedona (approx 1 in 5) and it quietens the engine a touch it runs more smoothly and seems to return more mpg
i realise i will probably get flack for this post since the v word seems to be the ultimate insult to some people but since you are on the search for silince any info may be of help and with todays fuel prices anything to stretch the mpg has to be good

Your suggestion is appreciated :)
However
If your vehicle will run on veg oil, it's fine :!:
The truth is, in the long run, it does damage the fuel pump :!:
Some pumps will take more abuse than others :!:

The best pump for veg oil is the Bosch manual pump :) BUT :!: even these need specific modified parts to be fully compatible :!: Just take a look at the Diesel Bob site :!:

The Lucas pumps are one of the least tolerant  The seals react with the veg oil and they start leaking   and that's for starters :!:

I must have the only Lucas EPIC pump that hasn't been repaired or overhauled yet :D Don't you wonder why :?:
Diesel has specially added lubricants that the pump relies on for it's lubrication :!:
So why don't you use engine oil in your rear axle :?: Or the other way round :?:
Of course it's oil and will lubricate :!: BUT not how the manufacturer designed it to be :!:

The handbook specifies diesel for a reason :!:

It might be possible to get away with a very small percentage, but do I want to take the risk :?:

A worn/damaged EPIC pump can easily cost between £750 to £1000 :!: To put right

Besides, it's as quiet as a mouse now :!: :D :D :D (on the inside  )

i am well aware of the risks involved in putting too much veg into a diesel even though the first diesel was built to run on peanut oil! so my sedona (they have a habbit of eating pumps @ 3/4000 to fix) i run with just a bit of veg to help the mpg and to lube the pump as current diesel is uls (ultra low sulphur)the sulphur was there as the lubricant for the pump and injectors but as part of all this green mlarkey the have removed most of the sulfur and the final comment whether you like it or not you are running veg as diesel now contains 5% bio fuel

Well the Lucas EPIC wasn't designed for peanut oil even though the engine would probably enjoy the change :!: :D :D
So how much veg oil do I put in when I tank it up :?:
And your address for me to send you my repair bill when it goes pete tong  :P :P :P

ahhh the smoke starts to clear the epic is by lucas how does a company keep going for so long selling such crap to so many, the name lucas and anything to do with autos (everything they make or have made) rings alarm bells i have a history of motorcycles and the electrics were crap until replaced with jap or german even my sedona (made in korea with a merc engine)has lucas/delphi common rail injection with a history of going "phut" but even so i run a 20% mix of veg to diesel as to if you decide to try veg its on your own head as my sedona is on mine but so far it has covered 10000 miles on this so if it goes phut i am pretty well even but this has gone away as i only suggested veg as a way of getting more hush so as for veg we agree to differ and you will pay full pump price and i will continue to save about 20p for every litre of veg i use plus a few more miles per gallon
ps if you are that unhappy with your di pull it out and we can do a swap for my lovelly quiet pinto
